Aroma: Musty-tang with particular carrot-like notes with a sweet, slightly citrus orangey background. Some describe a harsh chemical odor with subtle oxidized citrus lemon notes and woody hints.

Effects: Laboratory research has concluded that cymene has anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and pain-relieving properties. When applied topically, it is easily absorbed to reduce the pain and inflammation of wounds without the side effects that some drugs or painkillers can generate. Cymene can also improve mood, reduce blood pressure, improve retention and memory, and ease Alzheimer’s disease and ADHD symptoms.

Common plants containing p-cymene are anise, cannabis, coriander, and cumin. Like most terpenes, cymene adds a woody, earthy, slightly menthol aspect to the taste and smell of cannabis. Cymene is only present in small amounts in a few strains of cannabis. Still, due to the entourage effect, cymene’s presence can significantly impact the type, length, and intensity of the “high” experienced.

Cymene has shown promise in many therapeutic applications, including anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, anti-tumor, and pain-killing abilities. However, the usefulness of cymene as a medication is limited by a half-life within the human body of only 40 minutes. Ongoing research aims to prolong the effects of p-cymene and enable its use as a medication for various illnesses.

The Benefits Of Cymene

Similar to many terpenes like Geraniol, Camphene, and Ocimene, Cymene is an anti-inflammatory.

It has also been found beneficial in the fight against cancerous tumors.

The analgesic properties of the terpene assist in numbing and soothing pain.

Because it is a natural antioxidant, the anti-bacterial properties make it a contender in fighting antibiotic resistant infections. Subsequently those properties make it an important ingredient in topicals. Evidently it has been discovered to be effective against candida.

As A Neuroprotectant

In the first one, the terpene proved to slow down the onset of pain [4], and in the latter, the mechanism behind these properties was traced back to cymene’s activity on the opioid system and inflammatory cytokines [5]. This is in line with another study’s findings, which revealed cymene modulates in vitro and in vivo cytokine production; as pain reduction was “mediated by the activation of opioid receptors,” the authors suggested “involvement of descending pain-inhibitory mechanisms.” [6]

Antioxidant and Neuroprotective

Cymene has also been described as a natural antioxidant by Brazilian scientists [7], and as such, it has also been found to exhibit neuroprotective properties by reducing oxidative stress in brain cells [8].

Anti-Cancer

Cymene has been combined with metallic agents (e.g., osmium or ruthenium) to form complexes explored as an anti-cancer agents on laboratory-produced human cells. Organometallic cymene managed to induce cell death via apoptosis in ovarian cancer [9] and lung cancer [10], giving scientists a reason to believe in its anti-cancer potential and interest in future research.

With extraction innovations and our understanding of cannabis constantly advancing, generally low levels of cymene in cannabis can likely be overcome, opening avenues for cannabinoid and terpene mixology and optimal synergetic therapeutic benefits.

Nerolidol (also called penetrol, peruviol, or trans-nerolidol) conveys a scent of fresh bark that is sometimes described as “woody” or “fruity” and that may resemble apple, citrus, or rose. Similar to other terpenes, nerolidol is employed by the food industry as a flavoring agent, is an ingredient in some perfumes, and is even used in cleansers and detergents.

Medicinal Efficacy

Among the qualities of nerolidol are anti-cancer, anti-fungal, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Nerolidol acts as a sedative (similar to myrcene and linalool) and is an effective agent for fighting malaria and ulcers. It offers promise as a cytotoxic (anti-cancer) agent based on its ability to disrupt the membrane of cancer cells.

The Studies
Studies of nerolidol and similar terpenes has revealed multiple medicinal efficacies that could help patients with diseases as wide ranging as bacterial infections, cancer, malaria, skin lesions, ulcers, and—like many other terpenes—any condition involving systemic inflammation (including arthritis, asthma, and fibromyalgia).

A 2016 study entitled “Nerolidol: A Sesquiterpene Alcohol with Multi-Faceted Pharmacological and Biological Activities” that was published in the journal Molecular Diversity Preservation International found that nerolidol delivers multiple medical benefits, including its potential role in the treatment of cancer, malaria, ulcers, and any of the thousands of diseases and conditions based in inflammation.

Concluded the study’s researchers, “Nerolidol is one of the common components found in the essential oil of various medicinal plants. A majority of the studies reveal that nerolidol is the major constituent in many plants that accounts for their pharmacological and biological activities, such as anti-microbial, anti-parasitic, anti-biofilm, anti-oxidant, anti-nociceptive, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, skin penetration enhancer, insect repellent, and anti-cancer properties.”

A 2016 study entitled “Neuroprotective Effect of Nerolidol Against Neuroinflammation and Oxidative Stress Induced by Rotenone” and published in the journal BMC Neuroscience revealed the neuroprotective effects of nerolidol as derived from its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities. The study examined the efficacy of nerolidol for diseases of neurodegeneration, specifically Parkinson’s Disease (PD).

Reported the researchers, “In conclusion, our study suggests that nerolidol supplementation ameliorates improves neurodegeneration through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The present results highlight the therapeutic potential of nerolidol in neurodegenerative diseases, including PD.”

The study’s authors highlighted the need for additional research into the healing dynamics behind nerolidol. “Further study is required to fully understand the molecular mechanisms of how nerolidol potentiates antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities,” concluded the research.

A 2007 study entitled “Antifungal Effect of Eugenol and Nerolidol” that was published in the journal Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin investigated the effectiveness of nerolidol as a topical treatment for skin lesions. “Nerolidol improved the skin lesions infected by M. gypseum,” reported the researchers. The study concluded, “These results suggest that nerolidol could apply supplementary antifungal agents.”

A 2003 study entitled “Sensitization of Staphylococcus Aureus and Escherichia Coli to Antibiotics by the Sesquiterpenoids Nerolidol, Farnesol, Bisabolol, and Apritone” and published in the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy found nerolidol and three of its peer terpenes to be capable agents for fighting bacterial infections.

Antibacterial and antifungal activity

According to studies, this terpene possesses antibacterial properties that make it an excellent addition to topical products that kill bacteria. A 2016 study investigated the antimicrobial effects of this terpene against food-borne bacteria and revealed that it was effective.

Regarding its antifungal effects, one 2010 study looked at lemongrass essential oil, rich in nerol and other terpenes like limonene and geranial. The authors of the study revealed that lemongrass essential oil is a potent inhibitor of C. albicans growth — a pathogenic yeast found in the human gut flora.

Anti-inflammatory effects

Like most terpenes, it acts as a potent anti-inflammatory agent. One 2014 in vitro study examined the anti-inflammatory activity of 20 different essential oils — including lemongrass essential oil that contains a good amount of nerol terpene. The study revealed that this essential oil effectively reduced inflammation and allergic responses to certain allergies.

Another study revealed that nerol possesses anti-inflammatory and pain-blocking properties. Researchers looked at the effects of this terpene in ulcerative colitis and discovered evidence for a beneficial effect of nerol on colitis — suggesting its therapeutic potential for this inflammatory disease.

Geraniol Research and Benefits

• Geraniol extract is an effective insect repellent. In addition to mosquitoes, geraniol protects against sandflies. Also known as “no-see-ums,” these critters feast in hordes, and after they bite, people typically wake up the following day with clusters of bites that itch worse than that of mosquitoes. In other words, geraniol is a lifesaver.
• It’s not just large multicellular organisms that geraniol can defend against— it fights the small ones, too. One study showed that geraniol extract was a powerful antimicrobial agent against a host of different bacteria, including E. coli, L. monocytogenes, and S. enterica.
• Another study showed that when sprayed as an aerosol, geraniol extract had a significant antibacterial effect on respiratory pathogens like influenza and pneumonia.
• Numerous studies have exhibited preventive effects of geraniol extract on all kinds of cancer, from lung to colon to pancreatic cancer. Broadly, geraniol affects the signaling pathways of tumorous cells, preventing them from replicating at a malignant rate.
•  Geraniol is not as powerful in this regard, but one study found that it reduced the inflammation of blood vessels in hamsters with atherosclerosis.

Therapeutic applications of the geraniol terpene

We’ve seen just how useful geraniol is on the commercial side of things. Now, what about its therapeutic applications?

As it happens, geraniol has exhibited a lot of potential in the medical realm on account of its anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-cancer, and neuroprotective activity.

Anti-inflammatory

Geraniol has impressive anti-inflammatory properties. Several peer-reviewed studies have borne this out. One of them, published in Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine, found that geraniol reduces inflammation and oxidative stress associated with traumatic spinal cord injury in rats.

Meanwhile, a European Journal of Pharmacology study concluded that geraniol may lower the risk of atherosclerosis (a condition that causes heart disease) by inhibiting the body’s inflammatory responses.

Anti-tumor

According to a 2016 review, the existing literature demonstrates that geraniol has therapeutic or preventative effects on the following cancers:

• breast
• lung
• colon
• prostate
• pancreatic
• hepatic

Furthermore, geraniol has shown an ability to make cancer cells more responsive to chemotherapy drugs. As a result, the review’s authors described geraniol as the potential basis for a “safe and effective multi-targeted anticancer agent.”

Neuroprotective

Geraniol may have a neuroprotective effect, according to a 2014 study. The point of the study was to determine whether geraniol can mitigate neurological damage caused by exposure to a chemical called acrylamide.

In their conclusion, the authors wrote that geraniol provides neuroprotection and could be used to help treat issues arising from neuropathy, or damage to nerve cells. However, they stressed that additional research is needed.

Anti-oxidant

A study published in the Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical and Clinical Research found geraniol to have significant antioxidant properties. Specifically, geraniol exhibited benefits in relation to oxidative stress, a common feature of neurodegenerative conditions.

Anti-bacterial

A 2018 study published in Natural Product Communications evaluated geraniol’s anti-bacterial effects. Researchers tested whether combining geraniol with antibiotic medicines was beneficial in treating three bacterial infections—H. pylori, S. aureus (staph infection), and E.coli.

Geraniol was found to boost the efficacy of antibiotics in all three cases, leading the authors to conclude that it has “substantial” therapeutic potential as an anti-bacterial agent.

Anti-fungal

In 2018, Molecules published an article about geraniol’s anti-fungal properties. Along with the citral terpene, geraniol inhibited the growth of two fungi known to contaminate stored seeds and grains, especially in developing countries.

Therefore, geraniol could potentially serve as an effective grain preservative.

Other effects of geraniol

Among the most significant properties of this primary terpene are its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects that ease painful acute or chronic diseases. Moreover, its antioxidant and antitumor properties make terpineol a helpful agent that can help fight certain types of cancer, including breast, lung, prostate, ovarian cancer, and chronic myeloid leukaemia. Besides these qualities, it possesses antimicrobial activity, induces vasodilation, lowers arterial pressure, and acts as a sedative and relaxing agent. Terpineol Benefits and Uses

Plants with terpineol have been used as natural remedies for centuries. The lime blossom flower, which contains high levels of terpineol, was traditionally used to treat colds and called the “nectar of kings” for its scent and therapeutic benefits. While sparse research, and few recent studies, examine the therapeutic potential of terpineol, the existing evidence points to many promising uses.

Two separate studies in 2007 and 2010, respectively, showed that alpha-terpineol features anti-inflammatory effects, the latter of which recommended further examination of alpha-terpineol as a potential component of new anti-inflammatory medications.

Terpineol also presents promising antioxidative properties: researchers in 2011 compared the antioxidant effects of alpha-terpineol and other terpenes and found that terpineol had the most substantial antioxidant effect, comparable to commercially sold antioxidants.

Additional studies have pointed to terpineol’s potential in battling cancer cells. In the above analysis and a 2010 study, the evidence showed promising results in alpha-terpineol’s ability to inhibit the growth of cancerous tumor cells in vitro, suggesting its usefulness in treating certain types of cancer.

Finally, a 2012 study examining terpineol’s antimicrobial properties found that low terpene levels, alongside linalool, were an effective antibacterial agent in toothpaste and other mouth cleaning solutions.

Beta-pinene (β-pinene) is one of the two isomers of pinene, along with its sibling alpha-pinene (α-pinene). β-pinene is most known for it’s a woody and piney smell. It is one of the main compounds released by forest trees.1

Because both β and α-pinene share the same plant sources, they also share similar therapeutic qualities and characteristics. The main differentiator between these two terpenes is their smell. Whereas α-pinene possesses the unmistakable fresh and earthy scent (think pine and rosemary), β-pinene has a fresh, woody, and spicy aromatic quality (think dill, parsley, basil or hops).

Research shows that Beta pinene can enter the brain following inhalation, oral and intraperitoneal administration methods. Types of Pinene‍

Pinene may be the most abundant terpene globally, but that’s partially due to its structural varieties–alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. The two have slight anatomical differences, but the main distinction is alpha-pinene is water-soluble while beta-pinene is not.

• Alpha-Pinene (α-pinene)

Alpha-pinene also referred to as simply “pinene,” is the compound responsible for the iconic smell of pine needles, as well as herbs like rosemary. This variation is more common in cannabis and clinical research.

• Alpha-Pinene has anti-cancer properties and can shrink tumor sizes by significantly decreasing cancer cell reproduction.
• A study done in 2011 found that pinene has anti-inflammatory properties in low levels, while in higher doses, it works like a broad-spectrum antibiotic.

• Anti-inflammatory properties: A 2012 study examined alpha-pinene’s effect on acute pancreatitis. Scientists found that pinene can improve pancreatitis symptoms by bolstering immune support, reducing organ inflammation, and preserving long-term organ function.
• Antibiotic properties: A 2015 study looked at α-Pinene’s ability to fight the bacteria Campylobacter jejuni, a common cause of food poisoning. They found pinene increases your natural antibiotic resistance while destroying the cells of the bacteria.
